Almost two years ago, at the age of 33, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. With no family history, my husband Josh and I had no idea what we were about to experience. After months of surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, the medical bills started pouring in.

Even with “good” medical insurance, cancer treatment is devastatingly expensive. Josh and I soon realized that we were quickly eating through our whole savings. We knew we had to do something or we’d be in deep debt by the time my treatment was through.

A co-worker introduced us to the teachings of Dave Ramsey. It was like the saving-grace we’d been praying for! We listened to the CDs and bought his books. We built our budget and worked out how much debt we actually had.

We had little debts that added up to a lot – $19,000! It was a car, a little bit of student loans, credit cards, and money owed to a former employer. We started paying it off, big chunks and little chunks, along with cash-flowing my cancer treatment.

I am proud to say that 14 months later I am in full remission and WE ARE DEBT FREE! Including my medical bills, we cash-flowed and paid off over $24,000. We are now set to save cash for everything.

Through this experience, we’ve learned what’s really important. God, our kids, time together. Life can be very short, and it can change in the blink of an eye. I hope to never hear the words “you have cancer” ever again, but if we do, at least we know that we will be able to pay our bills.

God bless you, Dave Ramsey. You helped save our financial lives while I was fighting for mine.
